Brains and BrawnThe contacts in your eyes were starting to make your eyes water, but you didn’t even as much as blink. The wide screen before you showed the lazily rotating view of whatever planet, whatever solar system. It didn’t really matter. The important thing was the tiny little screen superimposed over some mostly brown continent, and filled with the face of a scowling green blood. Her mouth moved, the scowl never leaving, and at your ankle a smooth and deceptively dry tentacle tightened. You cocked your eyebrow and raised your chin in acceptance, and then lowered your steepled fingers as if to type. The green blood‘s scowl deepened as she read whatever response had been sent to her, and you mentally noted that if you really were the blue blood you were posing as, you would probably have her culled for that alone. It began and ended with a word.
Not a particularly strong or powerful word, but a word that changed everything. It wasn't too long or difficult to spell. It wasn't uncommon either. In fact, it was a perfectly ordinary word, but, I suppose, its commonplace origin is what made it so special.
I loved that word.
But the word doesn't mean much without the story along with it and I was always one for telling good stories.
I ignored the call from the other room and remained seated. That tone wasn't unfamiliar. Taking a bite from my toast, I waited for him to call again. It wouldn't be more than ten—
